Andy and I took a few days off and headed to Cape Maclear in order to celebrate his birthday. Cape Maclear is one of the most picturesque spots on Lake Malawi – granted the road leading to this gorgeous destination is absolutely atrocious! Five hours of miserable dirt roads…but ultimately worth it!
Our first full day, we took a boat over to one of the main islands where we proceeded to go hiking, snorkeling, and swimming. The entire area is part of the Lake Malawi National Park – home of the African Fish Eagle. As we were nearing the shore, one of the Fish Eagles swooped down and snatched a fish from the water with its large clawed talons – an amazing sight.
We stayed at Cape Maclodge – a lovely lodge owned by a French woman who has spent the last forty years in Africa. Needless to say, the French Cuisine was exquisite! Andy and I feasted on gourmet meals every night.
And, we even were able to break out the Hobie Cat and caught some serious wind as we sailed across the lake. Andy was truly in his element – in fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him so happy.
I, of course, was in my element as I snapped photos all weekend long – not to be outdone by Andy, who received a new camera for his birthday. We took tons of photos, so be sure to check out the ‘photo’ page on my blog.
By in large, we had a fabulous time.
Please continue to keep in touch. I’d love to hear from all of you.
Much love,
Amy
