Another update from Lilongwe…

Not too many things to report. After my horrific experience getting to Johannesburg, the remainder of my stay was somewhat (thankfully) uneventful. I went to Jo’burg in order to attend a Data Quality Workshop, which was housed in Sandton City – the ultimate shopping sensation. I spent every free second at Nelson Mandela Square, perusing everything from curios to African couture, marveling at the exorbitant amount of wealth in that region. The shopping center itself was a maze of spacious malls, containing everything from the obscure boutiques to famous international designer stores (i.e. Gucci) to beautiful restaurants serving exotic dishes from all over the world.

And I was even able to take in a movie – granted the new Harry Potter movie was terribly disappointing. At least I was able to purchase a few staple things for my house – like sheets and coffee! The most mundane items are impossible to find in Malawi. I’ve been holding off on making any purchases – seeing that my container is on its way. But, I have just been informed that my container will not be arriving until October or November! If I had known it was going to take this long, I may have packed differently!

As for Andy’s passport, we’re making some progress – although ‘some’ being the operative word. Andy returned to the Venezuelan consulate last week – but this time they accepted money and took his passport photos! So, perhaps movement is occurring on the passport front. Supposedly, they will get back to us sometime next month (presumably with passport in hand). And, he’s met with an immigration lawyer to see if he can expedite citizenship (and obtain a US passport). Once again, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Work is going well. I am feeling more and more confident about the tasks at hand. And I am slowly building my personal life here in Lilongwe. One of my co-workers is heading back to the states (I am SO sad to see her go) – so we had a small going away gathering at Lake Malawi (pictured above from left to right: Barbara, Bethany, Ann & Cynthia).

Malawi itself is truly magnificent. When I start to feel down, I just look around at the beautiful environs – which always lifts my spirits.

Much love,
