Cape Maclear

Anne, Emily, Kate & Amy

What a fabulous weekend! Since Friday marked a National Holiday (Malawi’s Independence Day), several of us took advantage of the long weekend and piled in my car where we proceeded to drive to Cape Maclear! On the map, the distance didn’t look too great…thus leading me to believe the journey would only last two hours – three at the most! Lo and behold, the nicely paved road gave way to horrendous conditions – making the 100-mile journey into an all-day affair. Even with four-wheel drive, I continuously felt the back end of my car fish-tailing from side to side.

When we finally arrived, we went to several locations trying to find accommodations. Because of the holiday weekend, most places were completely booked. However, we managed to score the ‘family suite’ of an amazing place, Cape Mac Lodge! The place was simply delightful, with beautiful views, great rooms, and an incredible restaurant! So the four ladies (Kate – my roommate, Emily – working for USAID for the next six months, and Anne – also working for USAID – South Africa but here for two weeks, and I) shared the two-story flat for the weekend. I can honestly say we all had a great time.

Cape Maclear beach has become renowned throughout Africa, especially for its kayaking trips out to the islands as well as diving with otters. This part of the lake is also part of Lake Malawi National Park, truly stunning in each and every way. We arranged a boat ride with one of the fishermen, Kidson, to take us to one of the nearby islands where we snorkeled with African Cichlids and ate Chambo for lunch on the rocks. By in large, it was a great day.

Cape Maclear also has quite the happening village scene. Each morning I walked the beach where it was bustling with fishermen, women doing laundry and washing their pots and pans. And the children are simply precious…always greeting you with big eyes and beautiful smiles.

The weekend itself was relaxing. I loved hanging out with the ladies. And I even purchased a new mask on the way home.

My latest mask!

The week is back to the grind! I expect this next month to be insane as I prepare for PEPFAR’s COP report.

Much love to all.

Have you been getting the e-mails we have sent? I have sent them to amygottlieb.net through the e-mail (not through this blog).

I tried to send thru the blog but after 30 minutes, the machine was still trying to send so I stopped.
