After several days of flight delays and cancellations, Mom and Steve FINALLY made it to Malawi. As a word of advice for anyone hoping to visit – avoid Air Malawi at all costs! All of their planes (i.e. both of them) are currently out of commission. Unfortunately, Mom and Steve missed their welcome party but at least they arrived safe and sound. Granted, we had an excellent celebration without them. Actually, the party had a dual purpose – we were having a going away party for our friend, Leslie, while at the same time, wanting to introduce Mom and Steve to all our friends. Leslie has already left the country – and will be greatly missed!

Mom and Steve are having a GREAT time. Malawi is a birders paradise! They have been off with Land and Lake Safaris (tour operator) ever since they arrived. They spent four days at Dzalanyama Forest Reserve and have left again for Zambia to explore one of the most impressive game parks, South Luangwa. My biggest regret is that I won’t be with them when they spot their first elephant, hippo or lion! If you have never been on safari, it is truly a magical experience. And my mom…I wanted to see her face and hear her screams as she spotted crowned cranes, carmine bee-eaters, and lilac crested rollers!
I’m planning to take next week off so we can all travel together. In the meantime, I’ve had to settle for a mini-weekend trip to Lake Malawi and a trip to the Old Town Market in Lilongwe. Will write a better update once we actually spend some time together.
